Fast Breaks: Suns-Spurs, Game 2
Remember February, when the Suns were thisclose to breaking up their roster? Well, neither do they. 'Los Suns,' as they were known on Wednesday, moved one step closer to their first conference finals appearance since 2006, beating San Antonio 110-102 to seize a 2-0 series lead.
Now this was a disheartening loss. Tim Duncan (29 points, 10 rebounds) played well. Richard Jefferson (18 points, 10 rebounds) played well. Tony Parker (20 points, 7 assists) played well. Manu Ginobili (11 points, 11 assists) and George Hill (14 points) were decent. The Spurs shot 50.6 percent from the floor -- while holding the Suns to 42.4 percent -- and 38.9 percent from the three-point line. As opposed to Game 1, when Jefferson and Hill were non-factors, San Antonio played a solid, all-around game ... and lost by a nearly identical score. The Spurs will review the film and try to make corrections before Game 3 -- but this was one they let slip away.
Phoenix's bench was huge. Both Alvin Gentry and Gregg Popovich praised the Suns bench play in Game 2, with Popovich singling out Jared Dudley's effort in the first half and Channing Frye in the second. Dudley gave Phoenix an infusion of energy, pulling down four offensive rebounds and finishing the game with 11 points.
"Jared Dudley changed the whole game," said Popovich. "He came in and was a monster."
Frye knocked down 5 of 6 three-point attempts, finishing with 15 points. He also chipped in some tough defense on Duncan down the stretch, banging bodies with him and preventing easy entry passes.
"We did a pretty good job of getting back to him and contesting those shots, and he still knocked them down," said Duncan. "That was the difference in the game."
Matt Bonner has been useless. Bonner's ineffectiveness goes beyond the numbers, if that's possible. Bonner followed up a two-point performance in Game 1 with a zero-point effort (on 0-4 shooting) on Wednesday. The Suns look like they are licking their chops when Bonner is in the game because if he's not making shots, he's not big or strong enough to battle with Phoenix's forwards underneath. For the second straight game the Spurs have been obliterated on the boards (49-37) and gave up a demoralizing 18 offensive rebounds in Game 2. Bonner's ex-teammate, Brent Barry, believes Bonner will settle down once the series shifts to Texas. But if he doesn't, it might be time for Popovich to gamble and extend rookie DaJuan Blair's minutes more in the backup role.
Manu Ginobili needs to be more aggressive. The Spurs can't win if Ginobili takes only eight shots. Ginobili averaged 12 attempts in the regular season and 14.8 through the first seven games of the playoffs. True, Ginobili's shot was off (he made only two), but he is perhaps the only player on the roster who can create off the dribble and finish at the rim. He needs to shoot more. Period.
Game 3 becomes a must win. Duh, right? The Spurs have too much experience to fold, especially when they haven't played a game on their home floor yet. But no NBA team has climbed out of a 3-0 deficit and the Suns are playing too well offensively for the Spurs to afford to dig that kind of hole. Aaron Kelly Sent Packing On 'American Idol'
On this week's "American Idol," the top five went old school, tackling the time-tested songbook of Frank Sinatra. So it was perhaps not all that surprising that the show's youngest contestant ended up getting the boot.
Yes, on Wednesday night's (May 5) results show, voters sent 17-year-old Aaron Kelly packing, thanks largely to his shaky performance of "Fly Me to the Moon," a timid turn that Simon Cowell rather rightfully described as "mouse" like.
Still, despite coming so close to winning it all, Kelly was all smiles when host Ryan Seacrest told him his time was up, saying, "I've had a great time; I've had a blast," before taking one more run at "Moon" (and, to be honest, this version was much better than Tuesday night's).
And while Kelly's exit wasn't exactly shocking, it was who joined him in the bottom two that raised more than a few eyebrows: Michael Lynche, the big-bodied crooner who won praise for his jazzy version of "The Way You Look Tonight," a performance Cowell and fellow judge Ellen DeGeneres particularly liked.
In the end, Lynche survived, and joined Lee Dewyze — a lock to advance after his swinging, swaggering take on "That's Life" — Crystal Bowersox and, somewhat surprisingly, Casey James, in the top four.
James had been most "Idol" experts' pick to get the boot on Wednesday, following an awkward version of "Blue Skies." And yet, he avoided elimination yet again (maybe it had something to do with his scruffy, sorta-beard).
Earlier in the show, Lady Gaga — who wore black (lace) in keeping with the classy, Sinatra vibe of the show — strutted through a performance of her current single "Alejandro," and Sinatra Week mentor Harry Connick Jr. crooned his way through a version of the Lennon/McCartney classic "And I Love Her" (from his new album of covers, Your Songs) and w was joined by the remaining "Idol" hopefuls through a medley of his own hits.
Next week, frequent "Idol" collaborator Jamie Foxx will help guide the top four through some of Hollywood's best-known movie music.

Yes, on Wednesday night's (May 5) results show, voters sent 17-year-old Aaron Kelly packing, thanks largely to his shaky performance of "Fly Me to the Moon," a timid turn that Simon Cowell rather rightfully described as "mouse" like.
Still, despite coming so close to winning it all, Kelly was all smiles when host Ryan Seacrest told him his time was up, saying, "I've had a great time; I've had a blast," before taking one more run at "Moon" (and, to be honest, this version was much better than Tuesday night's).
And while Kelly's exit wasn't exactly shocking, it was who joined him in the bottom two that raised more than a few eyebrows: Michael Lynche, the big-bodied crooner who won praise for his jazzy version of "The Way You Look Tonight," a performance Cowell and fellow judge Ellen DeGeneres particularly liked.
In the end, Lynche survived, and joined Lee Dewyze — a lock to advance after his swinging, swaggering take on "That's Life" — Crystal Bowersox and, somewhat surprisingly, Casey James, in the top four.
James had been most "Idol" experts' pick to get the boot on Wednesday, following an awkward version of "Blue Skies." And yet, he avoided elimination yet again (maybe it had something to do with his scruffy, sorta-beard).
Earlier in the show, Lady Gaga — who wore black (lace) in keeping with the classy, Sinatra vibe of the show — strutted through a performance of her current single "Alejandro," and Sinatra Week mentor Harry Connick Jr. crooned his way through a version of the Lennon/McCartney classic "And I Love Her" (from his new album of covers, Your Songs) and w was joined by the remaining "Idol" hopefuls through a medley of his own hits.
Next week, frequent "Idol" collaborator Jamie Foxx will help guide the top four through some of Hollywood's best-known movie music.

If I Could, What Invention Would
As we all know, the weather has always played an important role in our daily life. Our food and clothing, house and transportation, work and play are deeply influenced by the weather condition and we actually suffer a lot. For one thing, in the summer time, though we only put on light summer wear, we still have to fight against the heat wave the blazing sun often brings. For another, we have to wear heavy coats, scarves and gloves to be able to survive the piercing cold winter wind. We may, and frequently do, feel much trouble trying to get adapted to the weather, hot or cold. Therefore, if I could, I would invent clothes that can be flexible to all kinds of weather automatically.
The texture of clothing should be excellent and delicate enough to resist heat or cold. While it is too hot, the specially-made clothes would lower the temperature to a satisfactory extent. On the other hand, they would also be installed into some warming machines to help us go through the frigid winter. More marvelous still, solar energy would be applied to instead of other materials that might lead to air pollution in the making or using of this kind of clothing.
This way, not only we students but also those who are engaged in special occupations would benefit a lot from this unique invention. People who want to explore Alaska or other frigid places wouldn't have to carry heavy bags with winter clothes. Workers everywhere wouldn't have to worry about suffering heat stroke or catching cold without any air-conditioners in the working places. The first thing I want to say is—I'm so sorry your friend is moving!
The second thing I want to say is-are you from London, as in London, England? That is so exciting! Have you ever seen the Queen? Is it true that people there drive on the left side of the road? How big is Big Ben, really?
OK,I guess I should stop asking questions and get back to your letter-which reminds me of how beyond and I was when my friend Elizabeth had to move.
I met Elizabeth in my very first karate class. I was the only new kid in the class. Everyone else knew a lot of the moves already and had yellow or orange belts.
I had a total beginner's white belt and felt unbearably nervous the whole way through the class. I tried my hardest to follow along, but everything was way harder than I thought it would be.
Afterward, as I was putting on my shoes, I was thinking, There is no way I am ever coming back to karate!
And that's when I met Elizabeth.
"You did great!" I laughed. "I was so clueless"
"That's how I felt at first, too," she said. "If you want, I can help you practice."
"Really?" I said.
"Sure. By the way, I'm Elizabeth." She scribbled on the back of a karate schedule. "Here's my number."
"Wow, that's so nice of you!" I said.
She smiled. "No problem."
Anyway, to make a long story short, I called her a few days later, and we've been amazing friends ever since.
Now for the sad part. Not very long ago, Elizabeth had to move. Her family still lives in California, but if you know anything about my state, then you know it's gigantic. And I'm not positive about the exact geographic details, but the distance Elizabeth moved was about the same as if she had moved from London to Paris!
"You can't move!" I screamed when she told me the terrible news.
"I know. That's what I told my parents,"she said. "But they said we don' have a choice. We'e moving in with my grandparents, and I guess it'll be way cheaper than where we live now."
"Wait! I have the perfect solution,"I said. "You and your parents can move in with my family! We can share my room, and it'll be like having a sleepover在外过夜 every single night! I' sure my parents will be totally cool with it."
"That would be so great!" said Elizabeth, then she sighed. "I wish we could do that. But there's no way. My parents also want to be closer to my grandparents, so I think we're definitely going."
So Elizabeth and I had to come up with a Plan B. A would have been, we were actually pretty happy about our solution. Here's what we did.
First, we asked my mom to take a picture of us together and help us print it out regular size and teeny-tiny size .
We put the regular photos in special frames that we decorated Forever. I gave me the frame she decorated.
Then, we cut the teeny-tiny picture of us in half. I put the half with Elizabeth's face in my locket necklace, and she put the half with my face in her locket necklace.
So even though Elizabeth lives miles away and I only get to see her once in a while, our Friends Forever picture frames and lockets really do help with the "missing-you" part.
Besides that, our parents let us e-mail sometimes, and we still get to talk and crack up together on the phone now and then. Also, we love sending each other funny letters and packages filled with goofy surprises.
So, dear Already Lonely, being separated from your friend doesn't have to be as bad as it seems right now. Photos, letters, phone calls, e-mails, and great memories can really and truly make a friend seem closer than he or she is.

The second thing I want to say is-are you from London, as in London, England? That is so exciting! Have you ever seen the Queen? Is it true that people there drive on the left side of the road? How big is Big Ben, really?
OK,I guess I should stop asking questions and get back to your letter-which reminds me of how beyond and I was when my friend Elizabeth had to move.
I met Elizabeth in my very first karate class. I was the only new kid in the class. Everyone else knew a lot of the moves already and had yellow or orange belts.
I had a total beginner's white belt and felt unbearably nervous the whole way through the class. I tried my hardest to follow along, but everything was way harder than I thought it would be.
Afterward, as I was putting on my shoes, I was thinking, There is no way I am ever coming back to karate!
And that's when I met Elizabeth.
"You did great!" I laughed. "I was so clueless"
"That's how I felt at first, too," she said. "If you want, I can help you practice."
"Really?" I said.
"Sure. By the way, I'm Elizabeth." She scribbled on the back of a karate schedule. "Here's my number."
"Wow, that's so nice of you!" I said.
She smiled. "No problem."
Anyway, to make a long story short, I called her a few days later, and we've been amazing friends ever since.
Now for the sad part. Not very long ago, Elizabeth had to move. Her family still lives in California, but if you know anything about my state, then you know it's gigantic. And I'm not positive about the exact geographic details, but the distance Elizabeth moved was about the same as if she had moved from London to Paris!
"You can't move!" I screamed when she told me the terrible news.
"I know. That's what I told my parents,"she said. "But they said we don' have a choice. We'e moving in with my grandparents, and I guess it'll be way cheaper than where we live now."
"Wait! I have the perfect solution,"I said. "You and your parents can move in with my family! We can share my room, and it'll be like having a sleepover在外过夜 every single night! I' sure my parents will be totally cool with it."
"That would be so great!" said Elizabeth, then she sighed. "I wish we could do that. But there's no way. My parents also want to be closer to my grandparents, so I think we're definitely going."
So Elizabeth and I had to come up with a Plan B. A would have been, we were actually pretty happy about our solution. Here's what we did.
First, we asked my mom to take a picture of us together and help us print it out regular size and teeny-tiny size .
We put the regular photos in special frames that we decorated Forever. I gave me the frame she decorated.
Then, we cut the teeny-tiny picture of us in half. I put the half with Elizabeth's face in my locket necklace, and she put the half with my face in her locket necklace.
So even though Elizabeth lives miles away and I only get to see her once in a while, our Friends Forever picture frames and lockets really do help with the "missing-you" part.
Besides that, our parents let us e-mail sometimes, and we still get to talk and crack up together on the phone now and then. Also, we love sending each other funny letters and packages filled with goofy surprises.
So, dear Already Lonely, being separated from your friend doesn't have to be as bad as it seems right now. Photos, letters, phone calls, e-mails, and great memories can really and truly make a friend seem closer than he or she is.
